Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty band might have the greatest name in funk music today, but just because it’s funny doesn’t mean they aren’t meant to be taken seriously.

Like Fishbone or Funkadelic, these guys have fun – even get a little goofy – on stage. But it’s all in between some mind-bending, decade-spanning funk that makes the set fly by like you’re in a time capsule operated by George Clinton himself.

Mary Frances (pictured above) is cute, charismatic and has a hella set of pipes on her. Her soulful voice paired with frontman Al Al Ingram’s raspy rap is the perfect ying and yang for a modern-day funk band. As Yo Mama’s punch out cover/mash-ups like Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me),” the combination has never seemed to work so well.

The gang also did Ohio Players’ “Funky Worm” earlier in the set. When Frances funked out the monumental synth line, that has been made  famous for this generation by the sampling of Dr. Dre, the crowd went bonkers.

This was my third time seeing these guys, and with a brand new album out (entitled Onward!) they keep it really fresh. New songs, new covers and the same crazy energy put this guys on our list of must-see touring acts in the US. Their fresh take on an old genre is the perfect recipe for a funky, good time, so don’t miss these cats when they’re in a town near you!
